We know how Saturdays go for a lot of you. Soccer games, birthday parties, work. It can be hard to make it to the Waco Downtown Farmers Market between 9 and 1. But now you don’t have to.
On Tuesday, the Waco Downtown Farmers Market is launching an online store, called Market in a Box, that will give you access to market goods on Tuesdays.
You can go online between Saturday and Monday afternoons, place your order for your favorite market items, pay for them and market staff will gather your items and have them ready for pickup on Tuesday between 4 and 6 p.m.
Bethel Erickson-Bruce, market manager for Waco Downtown Farmers Market, said the online store is just a new way to strive toward the goals the WDFM has had from its inception: Increasing access to local food for consumers and increasing sales for local farmers and producers.
“We’re trying something different, trying to capitalize on the technological aspect of the food system,” Erickson-Bruce said. “There are actually a lot of aspects of online commerce for local food to explore.”
Office and pick-up spot for Market in a Box is at the new Waco Food Hub (420 Dallas St.), created by Brazos Valley Cheese at the old Waco Farmers Market location in East Waco.
“We’re living into the history of Waco’s food past, breathing new life into it,” Erickson-Bruce said.
The WDFM hopes to offer most of what’s available on Saturdays through the online store and even some exclusive items such as cacao milk from Mill King Dairy. But first they want to get the basic functions operating smoothly.
