A mechanical engineering graduate turned high school teacher, Devin Li didn’t start out in the tea business. Neither did his wife, Jaja Chen, a licensed clinical social worker. But when the couple noticed a gap in Waco’s market for authentic, thoughtfully crafted tea, they decided to take a chance, bringing something bigger than a drink to the community.
What began in 2018 as a small tent at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market has grown into a full-fledged hub for culture, collaboration and community. The name itself—“Cha,” the Chinese word for tea—reflects Devin’s vision of bridging cultures and creating connections one cup at a time.

“We loved going to the Downtown Farmers Market every weekend,” Devin explained. “It became a ritual, and we wanted to create something that captured that energy—somewhere people could gather, relax and feel like they belong.”
Cha Community isn’t just a place to grab a tea; it’s a space designed to foster collaboration with other businesses, celebrate diversity and create meaningful connections. Devin and Jaja carefully curate the menu, drawing inspiration from their travels and international tea culture. Their current favorite? The Ube Latte—a sweet, creamy blend reminiscent of taro and sweet potato—which has quickly become a local favorite.
Beyond beverages, Cha Community offers flavorful bites that keep customers coming back, from crispy dumplings and fresh pork buns to other authentic Chinese and Taiwanese options. Each item reflects a commitment to sharing culture through food.
Looking ahead, Cha Community plans to continue expanding its presence in Waco. The owners recently opened a new location near Baylor University and are actively working to grow their nonprofit efforts to support and connect local Asian-owned businesses.
Recognizing that Asian-owned businesses represent only a small percentage of Waco’s local economy, Devin hopes to help foster stronger communication and collaboration within that community. He and Jaja are also involved with the Asian Leaders Network, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening relationships and representation among Asian-owned businesses in the area.
For Devin, Waco is more than home. It’s a city full of opportunity. “We love Waco. From the farmers markets to the downtown community, the support has been incredible from day one.”

Cha Community continues to grow, but its heart remains the same: a welcoming space where tea meets culture, creativity and togetherness. Whether you’re stopping by for a weekend drink, a special Lunar New Year menu drop or a chance to connect, Cha Community always has a seat waiting. Stay connected and find the latest updates, menu items and hours on their Instagram and Facebook!
