The Historic Waco Hippodrome Theatre

Discover the History of Downtown Waco’s
Hippodrome Theatre

The Waco Hippodrome Theatre on Austin Ave. has provided the city with entertainment of all kinds for over a century. Since opening in 1914, the theater has screened films and hosted countless live performances and events. The building has been updated and renovated throughout the years but maintains its timeless charm.

The Waco Hippodrome contains over 100 years of history. First known as “Hulsey’s Hipp,” the theater opened its doors in 1914. Dallas businessman Earl Henry Husley was the first to operate the theater. It featured extravagant shows, including magic acts, orchestras and even live seal acts!

For years, The Hippodrome was an affiliate of Paramount Pictures and screened silent films. After a fire in the production booth required a renovation in 1928, the building took on a Spanish Colonial Revival style, which remains in its architecture today. The theater continued to offer various forms of entertainment as time passed, and famous personalities like Elvis Presley and John Wayne even visited Waco to catch a show!

Though the building has undergone lots of change, it remains an entertainment gem in Waco. Its most recent renovation took place in 2018 and included three new screens, a bar and an expanded event space.

Today, the Hippodrome provides the Waco community with contemporary and classic film screenings, live music performances, plays, comedy shows and various other forms of entertainment. The building’s different event rooms can be rented out for weddings, business meetings, parties or anything requiring a gorgeous space. The historical significance, timeless architectural features and countless performances held at the Waco Hippodrome Theatre have made it a local treasure. The Hippodrome is guaranteed to offer entertainment that you love! Check out the upcoming performances here!
