March 2024 to March 2025 marks a major milestone for the City of Waco: 175 years of history, culture and community. From its humble beginnings to becoming a hub of business, creativity and hospitality, Downtown Waco’s story is as dynamic as the city itself.
A Glimpse Into Downtown Waco’s History
Downtown Waco has seen remarkable transformation since its founding in 1849. Here are a few key moments that have shaped our city:
The Founding of Waco Village (1849): Downtown Waco began as a trading post near the Brazos River, serving pioneers and Native American tribes. The city was established in 1849 on land originally inhabited by the Huaco Indians, who lived in what is now the downtown area.
The Suspension Bridge (1870): For years, the bridge functioned as a Chisholm Trail crossing and, upon its completion in 1870, held the distinction of being the longest single-span suspension bridge west of the Mississippi. This iconic landmark connected communities and became a symbol of Waco’s growth. Now, the bridge serves as a focal point for numerous community festivals and events, as well as an excellent venue for parties and special occasions.
The Railroads Arrive (1880s): Railroads brought commerce and industry, solidifying downtown as Waco’s economic center.

The Alico Building (1911): Once the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, the 22-story Alico Building became a symbol of modernity and progress for Downtown Waco. Built to withstand the harshest weather, its sturdy design helped it survive the 1953 tornado virtually untouched. The Alico Building remains a cornerstone of Waco’s skyline today.
The Tornado of 1953: One of the most defining moments in Downtown Waco’s history is the devastating tornado that struck on May 11, 1953. It remains one of the deadliest tornadoes in Texas history claiming 114 lives and injuring hundreds more. Despite devastating losses, Downtown Waco rebuilt stronger, becoming a beacon of resilience.
The Revival Era (2000s-Present): Local businesses, events and new developments have reinvigorated downtown, making it a lively space for everyone. One of the most influential drivers of Downtown Waco’s resurgence has been Magnolia Market at the Silos. Opened in 2015 by Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of Fixer Upper, the Silos have become a landmark that attracts millions of visitors each year.
